Sedation Dental Services Are A Way to Overcome Dentophobia

Posted on February 11, 2018 in Uncategorized

Many people develop a fear of dentists early in their lives. This could be due to a combination of factors, such as wrong diagnosis, poor pain and discomfort management, embarrassment over teeth and mouth conditions, and previous negative experiences among others. A recent survey shows that 9 to 15% of Americans avoid seeing their dentist due to these fears and anxiety.

This means many families suffer silently while dental services today have advanced tremendously. Without proper oral care, you are exposing yourself to the risk of gum disease, tooth loss, poor dietary habits among other related health problems.

Sedation Dentistry to Overcome Anxiety

If you or someone close to you is suffering from dentophobia, it is high time you tried a whole new dental experience through sedation dentistry. This is a Godsend for anyone with an extreme fear of oral care professionals. To appreciate the importance of this approach in medical care, you need to appreciate how it works.

In the simplest form, you doctor will use sedatives to help you relax and reduce patina and discomfort during the procedure. The sedatives can be administered in different forms;

  • Oral: A pill is given to promote a high level of relaxation.
  • Gas: This helps you to relax throughout the procedure although you will still be conscious.
  • Intravenous: A sedative is administered through the veins into the blood.

Benefits of Sedatives in Dentistry

The advantages of using sedatives are enjoyed by both the patient and the doctor and they include:

  1. Quicker procedure because the doctor is able to focus solely on the affected area as the patient lies calmly. More work is done in one sitting as opposed to numerous visits.
  2. No fear and anxiety: The entire procedure goes on smoothly for the patient without any accompanying fears and anxiety.
  3. Pain-free treatment: The mouth is one of the most sensitive body parts and no one enjoys sharp objects prodding inside. With sedation dentistry, you are assured of a pain-free experience, which is what everyone wants.
  4. No painful memories: One major reason many adults suffer oral problems is the fact that they avoid dentists like the plague. This is understandable in cases where painful memories are involved. Luckily, your family doesn’t have to go through such horrendous situations because advances in dentistry will create only pleasant memories.
  5. More effectiveness: It is possible to talk to your dentist even when under sedation and this can lead to better outcomes of the treatment procedure.

Still worried about your next dental visit? You need not be; with this advanced procedure, you will have a comprehensive diagnosis and treatment without any accompanying pain and discomfort.

Dental Services in Hamilton – Do You Know The Drill?

Posted on February 9, 2018 in Uncategorized

Putting off a dental appointment can literally make or break of your teeth, so why are so many people neglecting their dental hygiene?

There is no simple answer but many sources suggest that the main reason people delay seeing a dentist is because of an irrational fear. ‘A fear of what?’ Is it a fear of a Dickensian dentist? Or of their more alarming Kubrickian methods? You can relax about those ideas, we don’t visit the barber shop for surgery anymore and times have significantly changed. Perhaps you have a fear of being told that your oral hygiene isn’t up to scratch, or that the drill might have to make an appearance? If you keep to your regular dental care routine then you can keep that terrifying drill at bay but any healthy oral hygiene routine should include a visit to a quality dentist at least every six months! If you’re taking your car to a mechanic more often than you’re taking yourself to a dental practice then read on; hopefully a quick run through of the basic standard procedures should tackle any phobias. Now let’s see if we can get you in the chair as soon as possible!

As soon as you’ve left the waiting room and in the chair, the examination begins. You can relax; you’re in safe hands. The dentist will be sure to give your mouth, teeth and gums an overall examination before tackling anything too specific. A quality dentist will check your teeth for decay, examine your gums for any traces of disease and pay attention to your head and neck. They will also study your bite, jaws, joints and even your facial expressions; they do this to look out for any abnormalities that may need investigating further.

After the dentist has given you a once over, the fun begins; they will start to give you a decent, deep clean. Dentists do this, no matter how well you brush your teeth at home, because they can clean your teeth in ways that you could never do yourself and you’ll be surprised to find out what you miss!

A quality dentist will take their time cleaning your teeth, searching for and eradicating plaque and tartar. If allowed to build up, these nasty ailments can really irritate your gums and cause some serious damage that could lead to gum disease. The clean also get’s rid of hard to reach food particles, deals with effects of sugary drinks and tries to remove tobacco stains too. You can expect to hear your dentist mention more than once that flossing is good for your teeth, that you should avoid fizzy drinks and keep away from those cigarettes too!

One of the best dental services that you can take advantage of is a decent polish; this service makes your teeth shine with a new brightness and allows for a smoother service which stops plaque and other bacteria taking purchase.
If it’s been a while since you’ve seen the dentist and you haven’t particularly taken good care of your teeth, the dentist will conduct a series of small tests; these tests could be more thorough examinations or your gums and mouth tissues, searching for diseases of it might mean an x-ray or two, searching for hidden cavities and things that the human eye can’t detect.

A trip to your local dental practice can be as simple as that. If you were expecting something traumatic, put those fears to rest. Even if you’re in need of a second visit for something more drastic, remember that you’re in safe hands and it’s better to deal with a problem rather than ignore it until it does become something to fear!
